SUMMARY:European Network Feasibility Study Launch: Using the CLT Approach to Renovate Self-Built Neighborhood Cova da Moura (Portugal)
DESCRIPTION:This event is part of the 2026 Global Community Land Trust (CLT) Virtual Summit\, a six-week series of online events from May 5 – June 10. Explore the full program and register for more events here.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOn May 20\, the European Community Land Trust Network will host a roundtable to launch a new feasibility study exploring the use of the CLT model to secure tenure and support the renovation of the self-built neighborhood of Cova da Moura in Lisbon\, Portugal. \n\n\n\nDeveloped through collaboration between the Cova da Moura Neighborhood Commission\, ISCTE University\, and international partners\, the study examines how CLTs can be applied in a European context to enable community-led renovation. The session will present key findings across legal\, financial\, participatory\, and urban planning dimensions\, while situating the project within broader European policy frameworks\, including the Renovation Wave. \n\n\n\nSpeakers will also reflect on the role of CLTs in addressing risks of displacement during renovation processes and their potential to provide long-term affordability\, housing security\, and social impact. Drawing on examples from Lisbon and beyond\, the discussion will connect local experience to wider debates on sustainable and equitable urban transformation in Europe. \n\n\n\nDesigned for policymakers\, researchers\, practitioners\, funders\, and community leaders\, this session will highlight how CLTs can serve as practical tools for delivering inclusive\, community-led renovation strategies. The event will be conducted in Portuguese and English\, with interpretation available in both languages and live captions available in 60+ languages to support accessibility. \n\n\n\nThe global #CLTVirtualSummit2026 is a six-week series of free online events running May 5 – June 10\, 2026\, and anchored by World CLT Day on May 15. Organized by CLT and community land networks from around the world\, the summit brings together practitioners\, residents\, organizers\, and allies to reclaim and honor the Black and Indigenous leadership traditions that gave rise to the CLT model and continue to shape community land stewardship globally. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nREGISTER HERE\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpeakers\n\n\n\n\nRylan Shewmaker\, European CLT Network\, Research and Innovation Lead (Belgium)\n\n\n\nRicardo Carneiro\, Estúdio Periférico\, Architect and Researcher (Portugal)\n\n\n\nJoana Lages\, Instituto Universitário de Lisboa\, Researcher (Portugal)\n\n\n\n\nEvent Organizer\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSupport this work\n\n\n\nThe CLT Center convenes practitioners\, researchers\, and communities from different regions to share experiences and strengthen the CLT movement globally.
